URB937: new painkiller "made in Italy"

Italian and American scientists discover the first piankiller that doesn't penetrate into the brain.

Genova, Italy. The ground-breaking study, published this week in Nature Neuroscience, could be helpful for millions of patients who are in need of new pain treatments.

The research group lead by Dr. Daniele Piomelli, Director of the Drug Discovery and Development unit of the Italian Institute of Technology, has developed a new analgesic molecule, called URB937, that binds to endocannabinoid receptors in the peripheral nervous system.  URB937 could be an alternative to centrally-active compounds, such as opiates, without their side-effects.

The analgesic effect of the novel molecule was demonstrated in rodents, performing a battery of in-vivo pain tests, using Ugo Basile instruments:

-          Hot plate

-          Plethysmometer

-          Plantar test

-          Dynamic plantar
